They're two Stateline staple industries: automotive and agriculture. And a new study by the Center for Automotive Research looks into how to better combine the two to help the area become greener environmentally and economically."We have established strengths in manufacturing and agriculture," said Norb Ziemer. He's the director of Growth Dimensions' Ag Tech Initiative. They're the ones who requested the study on applying bio- based materials within the automotive sector,"We're looking at how to take this to the next level how do we meet the emerging demands and trends of the automotive industry."The idea is to take crops like corn and soybeans and use it, not just for fuel to put in the car, but also for parts that make up the car. And the type of parts that could become bio-based is pretty broad ranged. "These materials can fit into bio based plastics, bio based composites, and foams that can be used in seat cushions," said Ziemer.
