High Blood

High Blood

The functional medicine approach is similar to the approach used in chiropractic and/or naturopathic medicine in that it seeks to see the patient as a whole and to approach disease treatment from a patient-centered model, asking “Why does this patient have hypertension?” rather than “What can be done to lower this patient’s high blood pressure?”  In the January 2011 webinar on the topic of hypertension, several contributory causes of hypertension were reviewed; several of these such as spinal dysfunction, excess insulin, and vitamin D deficiency can be present in the same patient. Addressing the contributory causes of hypertension in each individual patient helps ensure that overall health is improved, rather than the focus being on one manifestation of complex interconnected system dysfunction. Again, this is an important point: the functional medicine and naturopathic medicine approaches both seek to identify the underlying dysfunctions in each patient; when the underlying problems are effectively addressed, the hypertension generally resolves on its own as health is restored. An overview of this functional medicine approach will be the topic of February’s webinar.
