Florida Department Of Unemployment

Florida Department Of Unemployment

The Department of Labor and Employment Security was created in 1978 (Ch. 78-201, Laws).  It assumed the duties of the Dept. of Commerce's Division of Labor and Division of Employment Security which were transferred to the new Department.  It is the state counterpart to the U.S. Dept. of Labor.  It administers federally-funded activities; labor organization registration; and several programs, including unemployment compensation, employment services, apprenticeship, worker safety, and workers' compensation insurance. In 2000, the Agency for Workforce Innovation was formed by merging the Division of Workforce and Employment Opportunities and the Division of Unemployment Compensation (Ch. 2000-165, Laws).  Funding was stopped on activities and programs not transferred to new agencies and the Department of Labor ceased functioning on July 1, 2002.
